ARTIST BIOGRAPHY

Felipe Sangines-Uriarte (b. Bolivia), began his relationship with photography when he was still in elementary school. His grandfather gave him a Bakelita 120 film camera, which he used to take photos at school. Shortly after, he installed an enlarger and some developing trays in a closet, where he would lock himself in with a friend to make prints, surrounded by the typical smell of chemicals. His passion for photography has been constant, evolving alongside the technological innovations of the time — a milestone being the Polaroid Land Camera. His studies took him to England and Germany, where he eventually began his university education.
Back in his home country, Bolivia, he returned to photography professionally in the advertising field, without neglecting the artistic and creative side of the medium, exhibiting his work in solo shows in La Paz, Santa Cruz, Germany, and Austria. He currently lives in Barcelona, where he has worked as an advertising photographer for major agencies. Now retired, he continues to pursue photography without the turmoil of commercial work.
The AZUL photography series originated from his walks through the Barcelona Botanical Garden and the Cactarium. He is fascinated by the passive aggressiveness of cacti, and by giving them a dark blue color, he accentuates that quality, transforming the photographs from being merely botanical into something more evocative.
