Ulla von Czékus

Visual artist and photographer

ARTIST BIOGRAPHY

From her mother, she inherited the pleasure and fascination for cultivating plants. Influenced by her father - a hobbyist photographer who loved capturing family moments - since childhood, she gravitated towards the visuality of photography. As an adult, she merged these two pursuits into one to reflect on the transformation of life itself. In her works, she explores a dialogue between the indelible characteristic of time and the impermanence of human life. Today, a significant part of her artistic endeavour focuses on revisiting photo albums, personal objects, and numerous letters that belonged to her parents and grandparents. The family and its history gathered in a chest to be explored, where memories, faded from their truths, are plucked to construct new narratives that delve into femininity, memory retrieval, and the passage of time. Always contemplating life as a continuous experience in the face of its resplendence and, simultaneously, of its marked ephemerality.

Ulla held three solo exhibitions in 2022: in two of them she exhibited the work The Doubt, at the Museo Diocesano de Caltagirone, Sicily, Italy, and at the Museu de Arte de Blumenau, Santa Catarina, Brazil. The third was Tree of me, in Salvador, Bahia, Brazil, which featured works from the series Surroundings and The Doubt.
Since 2018 she has participated in several group exhibitions, the most recents in Italy and different locations in Brazil.

Ulla received the bronze medal at the Moscow International Foto Awards 2022 and the silver medal at the Budapest International Foto Awards 2021. She was the only Brazilian to be pre-selected for RPS 163 of The Royal Photographic Society, London/England.

Her works are in the Mediterraneum Collection, Catania, Sicily, Italy, and in the collection of the Academia de Letras da Bahia. Her works have been published in the books Daily Life to Keep Bahia, (Ed. Sobregentes) and Hybrid Photography, (Ed. Entrelinha), as well as in magazines Photo Trouvée Magazine, FotoargentA, Articulate, LF Magazine, and Dodho Magazine.
