Omar Borubaev
Multidisciplinary Artist
Since the early 1990s, he has pursued an independent path, weaving together painting, photography, computer graphics, and cinema. In 2007, he settled in Tyrol, Austria, where his work expanded into experimental film, video installations, and collaborative performances with poets, musicians, and theater makers. His practice often merges narrative with abstraction, performance with moving image, resulting in hybrid forms that challenge conventional boundaries.
Borubaev’s films range from narrative to documentary to experimental cinema. His feature Echo des Windes (2013), filmed in North Ossetia, unfolds a nearly wordless story through dance and music, immersing audiences in the life of a mountain village. More recently, his works include Urton der Schöpfung – Dom der heilenden Klänge (2021), a meditative exploration of sound, and Dirnenlied (2022), a crime comedy set in the roaring 1920s.
Exhibited in Austria, Germany, Liechtenstein, and Kyrgyzstan, Borubaev’s projects often address themes of migration, identity, and intercultural dialogue. Highlights include the group exhibition Authentisch Fremd (Galerie Nothburga, Innsbruck, 2011),the art project Kyrgyz-Stein (Gasometer, Liechtenstein, 2006) the video installation Planet K, the video installation Nullmensch (Theater BRUX, 2016), and the participatory performance Salon d’Amour with Margret Wibmer (Watten, Tyrol, 2023). His earlier film Tulips in Seven Winds (2005) reflected on Kyrgyzstan’s Tulip Revolution within the context of the country’s first Theater of the Oppressed initiative.
